PLANET Code was the US Postal Service’s barcode for tracking mail through its Confirm service. It looks like POSTNET with tall and short bars swapped. The Intelligent Mail barcode replaced it.

Where you’ll see it

  • Older tracked mailings, usually alongside a POSTNET barcode.
  • Not on new mail. Its tracking data is now part of the Intelligent Mail barcode.

Anatomy

Like POSTNET, every bar is tall or short: But each digit is five bars with three tall and two short, the reverse of POSTNET. So a PLANET Code was 12 or 14 digits long, with a frame bar at each end.
