Japan Post’s customer barcode (カスタマバーコード) encodes a postal code and part of the street address, so sorting machines can route mail to the delivery point. It’s a 4-state barcode printed near the address.

Where you’ll see it

  • Business mail in Japan, printed to qualify for barcoded mail discounts.

Anatomy

Each bar is in one of four states: The postal code and address number together are always 20 characters. Letters in the address are encoded with a control character followed by a digit, so each letter uses two of the 20 positions. Japan Post publishes detailed rules for extracting the address number from a written address.

Check digit

The check digit makes the total of all 20 characters’ values a multiple of 19, after each character is replaced by its check value.
