Code 11 is a numeric barcode used mainly to label telecommunications equipment. Its 11 characters are the ten digits and a hyphen, which gives it its name.

Decode one

Scan or paste a barcode and see every part of it.

Generate a valid barcode from fields.

Where you’ll see it

  • Telecommunications equipment and components.
  • Rarely anywhere else. If you’re designing a new label, use Code 128.

Anatomy

Each character is five elements, three bars and two spaces, and a narrow gap separates one character from the next.

Check characters

Code 11 uses one or two check characters, both calculated with mod-11. Labels with longer data usually carry two. The scanner has to be set up for the number the label uses, because nothing in the barcode says.
  • Code 128: the usual choice for new labels, with letters as well as digits.

Gotchas

  • One or two extra characters. The check characters were sent with the data. Set the scanner to verify and drop them.
  • Bad reads with the wrong check setting. A scanner expecting two check characters rejects labels with one, and the other way round.
